Firefighters are continuing to dampen down a large blaze at a lodge on the outskirts of Te Anau

Firefighters are continuing to dampen down a large blaze at a lodge on the outskirts of Te Anau

Fire and Emergency were alerted to the fire after 11pm last night on the Te Anau Milford Highway, with crews travelling from as far away as Invercargill and Balfour to help.

Assistant Commander Nic McQuillan says they've contained the fire to one wing of Fiordland Lodge, but work is continuing to suppress a flare-up and monitor hotspots.

He says the fire's been complicated to tackle, due to the design of the building and the roof construction.

A ladder truck, two pumps and two tanker trucks are expected to be on site for several hours.
