Coroner criticises Far North District Council's lack of safety warnings at hazardous beach

A coroner has criticised the Far North District Council's lack of safety warnings at a hazardous beach where a man died trying to save his children

Wairongoa Clarence Renata drowned at Cable Bay in January 2018.

Coroner Mary-Anne Borrowdale found his death might have been avoided had his family understood the hazards - and not swum, or stayed close to shore, or used flotation devices.

Her recommendations include the Council erecting prominent water safety signs at hazardous beaches.

She also recommended websites for the council and Doubtless Bay Promotion display warning messages.
