Queenstown Lakes District Council has passed new Freedom Camping Bylaws in time for summer

Queenstown Lakes District Council has passed new Freedom Camping Bylaws in time for summer

It's the most popular place in the country for it - and numbers of campers rose 30 percent in the year to June.

A judicial review prompted by the Motor Caravan Association quashed a 2021 bylaw - as too restrictive.

The bylaw introduces 15 designated sites, as well as allowing campers on some stretches of rural roads.

A 400 dollar fine will apply for camping in restricted areas.
