    A lottery jackpot of more than a billion US dollars has been struck...after growing steadily since September last year


    The Mega Millions payout...assuming it's claimed...is the third largest ever.

    The winning ticket was purchased at a supermarket in Detroit, and beat odds of one im more than 300 million.

    The winner will take the full jackpot if they accept is an annuity, paid in 30 annual instalments.

    Most winners go for a cash lump sum...which in this case would be 557 million after taxes.
