Auckland's been crowned the region with the worst savers, according to Westpac data

It's breakdown of their customers saving accounts shows on average those in the Super-City they have around 12-hundred dollars tucked away.

Meanwhile Canterbury and Otago customers are the best at building a nest egg, with a median of 42-hundred dollars in both regions.

Financial wellbeing programme manager Warren Ngan-Woo says it's a reflection of how the regions have spared during the tough economic times.

He says there's been a lot of positive business activity in the South Island, versus the North Island.
