Kyle Jamieson and Jacob Duffy destroyed the Pakistan batting order, rolling them for 91.
Jamieson took figures of three for eight while Duffy clinched four wickets.
In reply, New Zealand wasted little time in their run-chase with Tim Seifert blasting a quickfire 44 off 29 balls.
Stand-in captain Michael Bracewell has told TVNZ it's a dream result.
Game two is on Tuesday in Dunedin, when the White Ferns will also meet Sri Lanka to decide their series.
