The water quality at one of the South Island's most popular beaches - Kaiteriteri in Tasman - has been downgraded to poor, after faecal bacteria standards were exceeded in the last swimming season

The water quality at one of the South Island's most popular beaches - Kaiteriteri in Tasman - has been downgraded to poor, after faecal bacteria standards were exceeded in the last swimming season

Local Democracy says it's unrelated to recent flooding - with the bacteria traced to a stormwater pipe draining onto the beach.

Of four sea water samples that exceeded alert levels, only one was taken during wet weather.

Councillor Trindi Walker says she's concerned.

But Council senior scientist, Trevor James, says Kaiteriteri's water is generally good - with the problem area near the pipe.
