Concern persistent tough economic conditions are impacting young people's employment opportunities

Retail NZ says data showing consumer spending dropped 0.2 percent in December indicates poor economic conditions persist for businesses.

Chief Executive Carolyn Young says university students can normally get work through summer.

But she says this year, there's a lack of seasonal work and other opportunities.

She says this could affect their ability to continue with study if they don't secure the fund for housing or fees.
