Former All Blacks wing Grant Batty has died

Former All Blacks wing Grant Batty has died

Batty - who played 56 games for the All Blacks including 15 tests - was a fan favourite in the 1970s for his explosive speed, physicality and flair...as well as his distinctive moustache.

That all came despite his small stature - he was just 1.65m and 70kg.

One of Batty's All Blacks coaches JJ Stewart described him as a 'rugby playing freak'.

He retired in the middle of the 1977 series against the British and Irish Lions - despite being selected for the second test - following a serious knee injury.

Batty was 74 and had been living in Australia for many years.
