Questions raised over the Government's approach to progressing the fast-track legislation

Questions raised over the Government's approach to progressing the fast-track legislation

The Government pushed back against House Clerk advice it should be progressed as a private bill - and recalled Speaker Gerry Brownlee.

Brownlee then overruled his deputy Barbara Kuriger - something the Labour party's calling unprecedented, given a lack of references to previous rulings.

Barrister Graeme Edgeler says it's unusual the Government acted so quickly and didn't use other options available to it.

He says it could've moved a motion to suspend the standing order that limits this rule - so that it can look at it in a week's time.
