New Zealand and Papua New Guinea have re-affirmed nearly 50 years of diplomatic ties

Prime Minister Chris Luxon's met Papua New Guinea counterpart, James Marape in Wellington today.

They've discussed trade and economic opportunities, security and regional issues.

Luxon says he looks forward to working alongside PNG on addressing climate change - and upholding unity in the Pacific Islands Forum.

He's signed a new Statement of Partnership and announced a one million dollar investment - for public sector initiatives around disaster preparedness and governance.
