More beds for the Corrections system - aiming to improve prison mental health services

More beds for the Corrections system - aiming to improve prison mental health services

Last month's Budget allocated 51-million dollars over four years, to increase access to forensic services for those with acute mental health and addiction needs.

Minister-in-charge Matt Doocey says those needs are higher for people in the Correction system than for the general public, and there aren't enough beds.

He says 10 new acute inpatient beds will be funded, and eight step-down beds -- particularly helping the country's biggest prison, Waikeria.
