Calls for the Government to raise the bar for entry into the trades sector

Cabinet will soon discuss plans to significantly increase penalties for shoddy work, or dodgy behaviour by builders.
A new offence for hiding non-compliant work during inspections is also being considered - which could mean a 50-thousand dollar fine for individuals.
New Zealand Certified Builders chief executive Malcolm Fleming says the low ability of new builders is the problem.
He says it comes down to the skills of an individual on site.
