Staffing issues, junior doctors strikes and the onset of winter is said to be behind the huge strain on a South Auckland hospital

Staffing issues, junior doctors strikes and the onset of winter is said to be behind the huge strain on a South Auckland hospital

An average of 366 patients have been through Middlemore Hospital's emergency department daily in the past week.

It's about 30 patients more per day than the same time last year.

Salaried Medical Specialists Association Executive Director Sarah Dalton says the issue isn't confined to Middlemore.

She says they're concerned about Mid-Central, and its ability to see people in a timely fashion, with not enough beds.
