    Concerns about our iodine  intake

    Concerns about our iodine intake

A study published in today's Medical Journal has found the level of iodine in iodised salt has fallen since testing was done in 2009.

Iodine deficiency can affect the growth and development of unborn babies and young children.

Otago University Professor of Public Health Rachael McLean says they want salt manufacturers to check their levels.

She says iodised salt is compulsory in bread -- but they'd like it added to other foods too.

MacLean says it could be used in cakes, biscuits, meats and cheeses.
