New tools are on the way for young people to try combat gambling hidden in online gaming

New tools are on the way for young people to try combat gambling hidden in online gaming

The Problem Gambling Foundation has teamed up with Drug Foundation's Tuturu programme, to develop resources for secondary school students to counter the risks.

Foundation advocacy director Andree Froude says there's a gray area between gambling and gaming, which can be problematic.

She says one of the most common forms of this is loot boxes, which are often bought using real money to get a random in-game item.

Froude says players are buying the chance to win an item they want with no guarantee of getting it, and good items are rare, which is where the similarity comes in.
