GPs and nurse practitioners will soon be able to start treating adult ADHD - without needing specialist involvement

GPs and nurse practitioners will soon be able to start treating adult ADHD - without needing specialist involvement

An estimated one-in-20 New Zealanders have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - which affects focus and impulsivity.

From February, adults will be able to start their treatment journey through their GP, without first seeing a psychiatrist.

Specialist nurse practitioners will also be able to diagnose and begin treatment for children.

Pharmac and Medsafe say the changes will improve access to medication.
