Health experts are warning about the risks of New Zealand's lack of specialist eating disorder units

Health experts are warning about the risks of New Zealand's lack of specialist eating disorder units

An article in the New Zealand Medical Journal says medical wards are being forced to take on eating disorder patients when they can't provide appropriate care, delaying treatment for other patients waiting for beds.

Dr Cindy Towns says this violates the patients rights and puts physicians at medico-legal risk.

She ways we need pathways and resources to provide an appropriate level of care outside of hospitals - because wards don't have capacity.
