The IPCA says a Northland officer was justified in using a Police dog to stop a man avoiding arrest

The IPCA says a Northland officer was justified in using a Police dog to stop a man avoiding arrest

The Police Conduct Authority says it came after officers tried to stop a speeding car, whose driver tried to ram Police, before running off.

A dog and handler were called to track the man, also wanted for arrest.

The dog bit his leg as he tried to escape - with injuries that needed extensive hospital treatment.

Authority Chair, Judge Colin Doherty says use of the dog was justified to stop a man trying to escape, who was wanted for arrest, and known to carry weapons.

Police accept and acknowledge the findings.
