Wellington Police are warning people to stay vigilant with reports of a fake police officer scam making the rounds

Police say a person will claim to be an officer from a department, suggesting they've been a victim of fraud to get access to a victim's financial information.

But in reality - the person claiming to help apparent scam victims, is making more scam victims in the process.

Police say they will never ask for a person's banking details or pin number.
