    Domestic travel has seen a spike with trips to Australia and the Pacific Islands called off during the school holidays


    Data from Eftpos New Zealand consumer spending, including credit and debit cards, shows Kiwis haven't gone too far afield over the first weekend of the July winter break.

    Dot Loves Data Government director Justin Lester says people are tending to avoid any of the main centres.

    He says there's a clear doughnut effect around Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Hamilton, with people choosing to go up to three hours driving distance of the large population centres.
