Calls for student accommodation to fall under the Residential Tenancies Act

The Union of Students' Associations is disappointed at a report tabled in Parliament, following an inquiry into student accommodation.

The Act currently puts requirements for student accommodation above and beyond, what's typically expected in a landlord-tenant relationship.

Union president Andrew Lessells agrees with that - but wants change instead of the independent dispute resolution process, that the report recommends.

He says the dispute scheme has a place - but the Act could give students stronger protections if they've been overcharged.
