Many factors contribute to students not attending school

This comes as New Zealand schools are seeing increased truancy rates.

Fewer than 60 percent of students attend school regularly, and almost 8 percent are chronically absent.

Former Education Minister Steve Maharey says we have to be careful not to call it only truancy.

Mr Maharey says ill health and poor housing are two elements that can also contribute to high absentee rates.
