Police say Wellington man Sandy Calkin died from drowning in Wellington harbour in 2021

His body was found a week after going missing, following a night out with friends.

Police estimate he'd had 11 drinks through the evening; his friends say he was drunk but could hold a conversation and wasn't stumbling.

Calkin's family is calling for safety improvements around the waterfront.

The city council is leaving temporary fencing in place, and says balustrades and better lighting is on the way.
