New Year's Eve's been smoother than normal for emergency services around the country

New Year's Eve's been smoother than normal for emergency services around the country

Police have arrested about 40 people, mostly in Whangamata and Bay of Plenty.

Two people have been charged with assault on Police in Wanaka and Dunedin - and ambulance crews have dealt with a very abusive patient in central Auckland.

Hato Hone St John's Dan Ohs says it was quieter-than-normal for paramedics.

He says they were called to 177 incidents - about 40-percent fewer than a normal New Year's Eve, and about on par with a normal Saturday night.
