Surfing is the leading cause of water-related injuries in New Zealand every summer

ACC had almost six-thousand surfing related injury claims in 2024, at a cost of more than 15 million dollars.
ACC injury prevention leader James Whitaker says most injuries happen when people collide with the ground or other surfers.
He says take it easy with the first few runs to gauge how shallow it is and other hazards.
