The police dog handler who pulled a Gore toddler's body from a pond says the dog only picked up the scent from about 30 metres away

Three-year-old Lachlan Jones died five years ago, found in an oxidation pond about a kilometre from his home.

Constable Lachlan MacDonald's statement was held in a closed court for health reasons - and only released yesterday.

He says on the night the child died, the dog's tracking behaviour didn't change when he arrived to the pond gates - which would've indicated a person went over the fence.

MacDonald says the dog picked up an airborne scene - not on the ground.

The first of two coroners inquest 15-day fixtures of a concluded last Wednesday, with the second beginning in August.
