Stats NZ latest estimates that's more than 930-thousand people - 18 percent of the population - as of June this year.
It's roughly double the amount in 1991, when Maori comprised 13 percent of the population.
Population and housing spokesperson, Sean Broughton, says latest projections indicate numbers of Maori are likely to surpass one million by 2033.
