Wellington's 24-7 Police Maritime Unit could officially be a thing of the past

Wellington's 24-7 Police Maritime Unit could officially be a thing of the past

Police are trialling a new operating model for three months starting December, prompted by significant falls in overnight responses over recent years.

They'll instead operate from 9am to 6pm weekdays - and eight to six most weekends.

Acting District Commander, Inspector Nick Thom , says people in distress in the water should still call emergency services - and the maritime unit or coastguard will respond.

He says he's comfortable this model will be suitable for Wellington demand.
