Eddie Murphy thinks 'Beverly Hills Cop' marked a turning point for the movie business

The 63-year-old actor played Axel Foley, a street-smart detective, in the 1984 action comedy film, and Eddie believes the movie was a landmark moment for Hollywood

Speaking to 'Extra', Eddie explained: "Before 'Beverly Hills Cop', there had never been a movie that starred a black man, black person, that was successful all around the world. Even still, to this day, when black folks, we, make movies, most of the time they work in the States and outside of the country they don't work."

Eddie suggested that his success has paved the way for the likes of Will Smith and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson.

The comedian-turned-actor said: "'Beverly Hills Cop' started it, all around the world - that's where you get Will and The Rock, they do it now, but 'Beverly Hills Cop' is the first one that did it."

Eddie has enjoyed huge successes during his career. However, whenever he travels overseas, he's still best-known for playing Axel in the 'Beverly Hills Cop' films.

The actor - who has reprised the role for 'Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F' - recently told 'Today': "Beverly Hills Cop' was my first movie that I'm the lead in. If I travel overseas they call me Axel Foley."

Eddie hailed Axel as an "everyman" and he believes that fans love the relatable personality of his on-screen character.

The movie star - who enjoyed huge success as a stand-up comedian, before he switched his focus towards acting - said: "Axel is an everyman. He's not a superhero or a super-cop, he's the everyman that rises to the occasion. I think that's why people like it. And more than anything, he's funny."
