Donald Trump believes God "saved" him from being assassinated so he could "save the world"

The 76-year-old US presidential candidate was shot by Thomas Matthew Crooks - who was subsequently killed by Secret Service agents - at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania last month and he believes it was more than just luck that meant his life was spared

In an interview with Dr. Phil McGraw, he said: "I mean, the only thing I can think is that God loves our country, and he thinks we're going to bring our country back. He wants to bring it back. It's so bad right now.

"What's happening when you look at the crime, the horrible things that are happening inside our country, and it could be solved. It could be solved fairly quickly.

"It has to be God. I mean, how can you say it's luck when it's, you know, 20 million to one? I mean, it's just not possible that I was in that position. It's the only position where that bullet could have missed."

Asked if he believed he was "spared for a reason", he added: "Well, God believes that, I guess. We'll have to see."

Trump reiterated his belief when discussing his opponent, current US Vice-President Kamala Harris.

He said: "They give you a nice, fresh opponent, and if I win [the election], that would really serve to say that if there's some incredible power up there that wanted me to be involved in saving [the US] - and maybe it's more than saving the nation. Maybe it's saving the world.

"You know, I get along with all those tough guys."

Trump previously held office from 2017 - 2021, and he told Phil that being president was "much more dangerous than a race car driver," or any other profession.
