'Borat Subsequent Moviefilm' was named Best Comedy at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday (28.02.21)

The comedy sequel took home the honour for Best Picture, Musical or Comedy, with star Sacha Baron Cohen taking a swipe at the "all-white" Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), who organise the ceremony, and also thanking Rudy Guiliani for his controversial appearance in the film

He said: "Thank you to the all-white Hollywood Foreign Press. I’ve gotta say this movie couldn’t have been possible without my co-star, a fresh, new talent who came from nowhere and turned out to be a comedy genius.

“I’m talking, of course, about Rudy Giuliani. I mean, who can get more laughs out of one unzipping? Incredible. Our movie was just the beginning for him, Rudy went on to star in a string of comedy films. Hits like ‘Four Seasons Landscaping,’ ‘Hair Dye Another Day’ and the courtroom drama ‘A Very Public Fart.'”

He also thanked the film’s crew, who had run "the risk of getting arrested, the risk of getting COVID" in making the movie.

He added: “They did that because we all believed so deeply in releasing this movie before the election to show the danger of lies, hates, conspiracies and the power of truth, empathy and democracy.”

Sacha also took the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy award - for which he was nominated alongside James Corden ('The Prom'), Lin-Manuel Miranda ('Hamilton'), Dev Patel ('The Personal History of David Copperfield') and Andy Samberg ('Palm Springs') for the film, and poked fun at former President Donald Trump and his repeated claims of election fraud.

Seated next to wife Isla Fisher, he quipped: "Thank you again. Hold on, Donald Trump is contesting the result - he's claiming a lot of dead people voted, which is a very rude thing to say about the HFPA."

Earlier in the evening, the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy went to Rosamund Pike for 'I Care A Lot' and she singled out 'Borat Subsequent Moviefilm' star and fellow nominee Maria Baklova in her acceptance speech.

She said: “In my film I had to swim up from a sinking car. I think I would have rather had to do that than be in a room alone with Rudy Guiliani."
