'Nomadland' was named Best Drama at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday (28.02.21)

The Great Recession drama - which stars Frances McDormand as a woman who leaves home to travel around the American West - scooped the prestigious Best Motion Picture, Drama accolade ahead of 'The Father', 'Mank', 'Promising Young Woman' and 'The Trial of the Chicago 7' at this year's ceremony

Stunned director Chloe Zhao accepted the honour and said: "I'm speechless.

"Look, Nomadland at its core, for me, is a pilgrimage through grief and healing.

"So for everyone who has gone through this difficult and beautiful journey at some point in their lives, this is for you. We don't say goodbye, we say 'see you down the road.' Thank you."

Earlier in the evening, Chloe became only the second woman in the event's 78-year history to be named Best Director, following in the foosteps of 'Yentl' filmmaker Barbra Streisand.

She said: "I especially want to thank the nomads who shared their stories with us.

“I asked one of them, Bob Wells, to help me out here, and this is what he said about compassion. ‘Compassion is the breakdown of all the barriers between us. A heart-to-heart bonding. Your pain is my pain. It’s mingled and shared between us.’ This is why I fell in love with making movies and telling stories."

Chloe beat off competition from David Fincher ('Mank'), Regina King ('One Night in Miami'), Emerald Fennell ('Promising Young Woman'), and Aaron Sorkin ('The Trial of the Chicago 7') to take the prize.

Paying tribute to her fellow nominees, she said: "Thank you for making beautiful, beautiful movies."
