Kesha thought 'Tik Tok' was "too dumb" to release

The 38-year-old pop star released the hit single back in August 2009, and Kesha has now confessed to being astonished by the song's success

Asked if she knew 'Tik Tok' would become a big hit, Kesha said on 'The Jennifer Hudson Show': "No, oh my God!

"When I was writing 'TiK ToK', it was weird, because the dumber it got, the better it got. Which was confusing, because I like to think of myself as a fairly intelligent human being. But it just got dumber and dumber and better and better.

"When I listened to the final product. I was like, 'This is too dumb.' And it's like 1.5 billion streams at this point."

Kesha actually learned to craft lyrics with the help of her mom, Pebe Sebert, who has previously co-written hits for the likes of Dolly Parton and Pitbull.

Kesha shared: "My mom's a songwriter, and she taught me how to write songs since I was little. I would go to the studio with her and fall asleep in the guitar case.

"I would come home from school, and I'd be like, 'Mom, this boy was mean to me,' and she'd be like, 'Write a song about it.' It was, like, how we dealt with everything as a family."

Kesha previously described songwriting as "something sacred".

The pop star explained that songwriting has helped her to navigate some of the highs and lows in her life.

Kesha said during her first-ever TED Talk: "What else in the world can change your mind, can change your mood, can change your entire energetic frequency in three and a half minutes? For me that's pop music, and for me that's alchemy."

The music star actually finds it easier to express herself through songwriting.

Kesha - who released her debut studio album, 'Animal', back in 2010 - said: "Songwriting is a direct line of communication with the truth. In song, you can say things you can't say out loud to anyone else - not your friends, not your therapist, not your mom.

"When I'm feeling anything intensely, I know it's time for me to write a song."
