CCTV has caught the moment an irate passenger punched an Auckland bus driver in the head on December 17, on Queen Street

Footage shows the driver retaliated by kicking the assailant in the back.

Tramways Union boss Gary Froggatt is calling a formal warning to the driver by NZ Bus heavy handed and 'unfair'.

He says drivers need better training on dealing with attacks.

He's planning to appeal the warning and preparing a personal grievance case on behalf of the driver.
