Police say they're deeply affected by Paul Tainui being released at a Christchurch checkpoint in 2018

Police say they're deeply affected by Paul Tainui being released at a Christchurch checkpoint in 2018

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has cleared officers for not arresting the murderer on parole, caught drink driving with knives in his car.

He went on to kill Nicole Tuxford, 24 years after a similar killing of an ex-girlfriend.

He received his second life sentence for the murder.

District Commander Superintendent John Price says the report shows officers made appropriate decisions based on the information they had.

The IPCA found the decision to summons - rather than arrest - Tainui for his drink driving offence, was in keeping with standard police practice.
