A coroner's found burnouts and vandalism at a Hastings intersection, contributed to the death of a Canadian tourist

A coroner's found burnouts and vandalism at a Hastings intersection, contributed to the death of a Canadian tourist

Open Justice reports Helen Poon died in hospital five days after the December 2023 crash.

The 34-year-old drove straight through the intersection of State Highway 50 and Maraekakaho Road, colliding with a Toyota Landcruiser.

Coroner Mark Wilton found road markings weren't visible, and signs were missing or turned around - giving no clear indication to give way.

He's recommending NZTA consider how to further deter anti-social driving, and carry out regular checks of the intersection.
