Two vessels are stricken off the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, with one leaking diesel fuel into the water

Waikato Regional Council says it received reports at about 8 this morning of a commercial long liner in the Whangamata Harbour with 500 litres of fuel onboard.

Regional on-scene commander Derek Hartley says due to the wet conditions it's unsafe to go out on the water.

He says salvors are scheduled to arrive at the scene tomorrow.

The second vessel,is a yacht, grounded in Flaxmill Bay near Cooks Beach.

Experts have arrived on the scene and are working on getting it to the Whitianga marina.
