A sting in the tail of Spring for the capital

A sting in the tail of Spring for the capital

Today officially marks the first day of summer - but for Wellingtonians it's felt more like winter overnight.

A storm has been lashing the region bringing heavy rain and gale force southerlies.

Fire crews have responded to 21 weather-related call-outs between 7 last night and 5 this morning.

The majority of jobs related to fallen trees and surface flooding - with three trampolines also sent flying.

Two houses were evacuated in Whitby last night after part of a bank collapsed.

And Weather Watch says some flights in and out of the capital could be disrupted today due to the strong winds.

Metlink says all harbour ferry sailings have been cancelled - shuttles are running instead.
