The top of the South Island is facing another day of extreme weather

The top of the South Island is facing another day of extreme weather

Wind has been wreaking havoc -- with fallen trees causing major disruptions on State highway 6 between Kohatu and Glenhope.

A heavy rain warning is in place for the area.

MetService meteorologist Dan Corrigan says winds could also be strong -- with winds of up to 90 kilometres per hour already being recorded in some exposed places.

Heavy rain warnings are also in place for the Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, and Westland.

Strong wind warnings are in place for Hawke's Bay, Gisborne and Banks Peninsula.
