The public is being asked to help count Kereru

Today marks the first day of the Great Kereru Count, which has run for the past seven years.

The native wood pigeon is vital to the country as it's the only bird able to spread seeds of many native trees.

Organizer of the count, Tony Stoddard, says the data will help councils make decisions around areas of significance

The count runs until the 26th of September.
