A dead striped dolphin has been beheaded on South Auckland's Kariotahi Beach

A dead striped dolphin has been beheaded on South Auckland's Kariotahi Beach

The mammal was found on Wednesday evening, and by this morning was decapitated.

DOC Biodiversity Ranger, Olivia Keane, says mutilating dead marine mammals is an offence.

Anyone caught can face up to two-years in prison or a fine of up to 250-thousand dollars.

She says DOC are investigating the incident and encourage anyone with information to come forward.
