GeoNet webcams show there was steam and gas from Whakaari White Island this morning

The Volcanic Alert Level remains at two - moderate to heightened unrest.

In the hour from 6.30 this morning, a vigorous steam and gas plume was seen rising from the island with ash falling on the island.

GeoNet says the island is in a period of elevated unrest and short lived steam and gas emissions may become more frequent.

Further gas and observation flights will be conducted by GNS Science volcanologists to monitor activity levels.
