The closure of the Desert Road is expected to provide a boost to the local economy

The closure of the Desert Road is expected to provide a boost to the local economy

State Highway 1 between Turangi and Waiouru is closed from today, for at least two months, while NZTA carries out essential repairs.

Contractors will be reconstructing the road improving drainage, clearing 15 kilometres of shoulders, and replacing the deck of the Mangatoetoenui Bridge.

Ruapehu Mayor Weston Kirton says local businesses have been looking forward to the influx of motorists, after a couple of hard years.

Kirton says it's a great opportunist for motorists to call in for a quick coffee or a chocolate eclair.
