The AFL still plans to open the season in Brisbane, while keeping an eye on Cyclone Alfred

The tropical storm is set to cross from the Sunshine Coast on Thursday when the Lions are poised to kick off the season at the 'Gabba against Geelong.

Alfred could intensify into a category-two system, with winds at the centre of the cyclone currently at 95 kilometres per hour with gusts of up to 130.

600 millimetres of rain might also fall per day.
