    Nelson Mayor Nick Smith says the death of a person from floodwaters is a tragedy


    Police say one person died south of Wakefield this morning when they were reportedly struck by a tree while clearing flood damage.

    Iwi have placed a rahui across the South Island's northern coastline, preventing entering ,the waterways and collection of kai as floodwaters continue to pose a risk.

    Local states of emergency are still in place for Nelson Tasman and Marlborough.

    Marlborough Emergency Management is winding down its response.

    State Highway 63 is closed between Renwick and St Arnaud.

    State Highway 6 is closed from Kohatu to Kawatiri Junction.,
