Residents in the Southland town of Gore are still warned not to drink water from their taps for sometime yet

New results show the nitrate levels in the water at the treatment plant are back within the maximum acceptable value, since routine testing yesterday revealed elevated levels.

There are water tankers across Gore, and locals are advised to continue drinking bottled water.

Gore District Council General Manger of Critical Services Jason Domigan says they need to see three clear days of testing, before they give it the all clear.

Mr Domigan says it takes a bit more time to make sure the results aren't a one off and and for safe drinking water to flow through the network.
