Northlanders will be holding their breath everything goes to plan and they can sail into alert level three later this week

Northlanders will be holding their breath everything goes to plan and they can sail into alert level three later this week

Everywhere south of Auckland will shift to alert level three at midnight tonight.

Northland will join them from midnight Thursday so long as wastewater testing comes back clear.

Tests from 20 additional sites in Northland are due back on Thursday.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has warned level three doesn't mean freedom, it means caution.

Meanwhile Auckland will remain at alert level four for another fortnight.

The region has the vast majority of the cases in the outbreak - 547 of the outbreak's 562 - while Wellington has the remaining 15.

There are 37 people in hospital - five in ICU.
