Following weeks of avalanches, skiers and snowboarders are being urged to keep to the tracks this weekend in the Southern Lakes

Earlier this week, a ski guide died after being trapped in an avalanche at the South Island's Arrowsmith Range.

There's also been two recent avalanche incidents near Wanaka's Treble Cone ski field in the past few days.

Mountain Safety Council CEO Mike Daisley says the only people that should be heading to the back country, are those with an expert skillset and gear.

He says if you don't fit that skillset, stick to the safety zones in ski areas.
