A Christchurch community group wants wheelie bin latches, to keep rubbish contained across the city

A Christchurch community group wants wheelie bin latches, to keep rubbish contained across the city

The Opawaho Heathcote River Network trialled the effectiveness of bin latches reducing litter at 700 households last year.

Of the 63 participants whose bins overturned in strong winds, 83 percent reported the latches successfully kept rubbish contained.

The Christchurch City Council will look at establishing a stock of up to 25-thousand units - with a set-up cost of just over 100-thousand dollars, funded through the already-confirmed Kerbside Service Enhancement.

Members of the public would then be able to purchase a latch lock for just over $4, from council offices, libraries, and community hubs.
